    The Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences organized a thematic forum titled "Leveraging Space Technology for Africa’s Sustainable Development" in Pretoria, South Africa on December 5, 2024. The forum was part of the 2024 South Africa Science Forum and was co-hosted by AIR, the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), and the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO). Over 80 experts and representatives from China, South Africa, and international organizations participated in the event.

    On October 28, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) held a summary meeting in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to review the progress of the Red Palm Weevil Eradication Program in the Near East and North Africa region. During the event, Prof. Huang Wenjiang from the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences was awarded the FAO Achievement Honorary Award. This recognition was for his pioneering contributions to early remote sensing monitoring and loss assessment of the red palm weevil, an invasive pest that poses a significant global threat to palm trees.

    Professor Huang Wenjiang Assists UAE in Red Palm Weevil Monitoring and Control

    From August 27 to September 1, 2024, Professor HUANG Wenjiang from the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIRI) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) participated in field experiments for the FAO Red Palm Weevil Project in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as an international consultant for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). This invitation was extended by FAO and the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA). During his time in the UAE, Professor Huang also engaged in academic exchanges.
