International Workshop Advances Earth Observation Cooperation in Tropical Asia

An international technical workshop on Tropical Asia Cooperation Network about Earth Observation was held in Beijing on June 30, bringing together more than 60 experts and scholars from China and abroad.
International participants included representatives from the National University of Laos, Jagannath University in Bangladesh, and Mahanakorn University of Technology in Thailand. Chinese participants came from research institutes, universities, national data and satellite application centers, and commercial space companies.
The workshop focused on strengthening regional cooperation in Earth observation data and developing locally led data governance capabilities. It sought to help partner countries establish independent systems for managing, processing, and delivering data services, while promoting a transition from one-way data provision to joint capacity building. These efforts are expected to support the two-way flow and sustainable use of regional data resources.
During the technical sessions, participants shared research advances and practical needs in remote sensing data applications. Discussions centered on how technical training, personnel exchanges, and the alignment of data standards could help partner countries develop their own data processing and application systems.
International representatives outlined their countries’ needs in areas such as agricultural monitoring and disaster response. They also identified intelligent remote sensing data processing, analysis-ready data products, and data publishing and sharing as priority areas for future cooperation.
Participants agreed that locally based data governance capacity is essential to sustainable regional Earth observation cooperation. They called for closer collaboration through technical training, joint research, and personnel exchanges to further develop the Tropical Asia Earth Observation Cooperation Network.
The workshop was hosted by the Aerospace Information Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (AIRCAS). Chinese participants included representatives from the National Earth Observation Data Center, the Hainan Satellite Data and Application Research Center of the China National Space Administration, the Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Zhengzhou University, AIRSAT Technology Group Co., Ltd., and Spacety Co., Ltd.
