The agreement was signed among five parties including the International Science Council (ISC), the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), the China Association for Science and Technology (CAST), the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of CAS.
Launched in 2010 in Beijing, IRDR is a decade-long international research program brings together professional knowledge in the field of science, technology, and engineering to improve people's understanding of various disaster risks.
The International Program Office of IRDR is hosted by AIR. In the past decade, IRDR has established 13 National Committees, one Latin American Regional Committee, 18 International Centers of Excellence (ICoE) in disaster reduction worldwide and has been widely recognized by the international community as a major cross-cutting international science program in the field of disaster reduction and post-disaster recovery and reconstruction.
In its new phase, the program will beef up efforts to mobilize science for the reduction of all types of disaster risk, and to build resilience and reduce vulnerability by integrating risk science with climate change adaptation and mitigation, and sustainable development.
“The signing of the second phase of the cooperation agreement is an important measure for China to promote international sci-tech cooperation and contribute to UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals”, said LUO Hui, head of the Department of International Affairs of CAST. According to the agreement, CAST will continue to provide financial support for the program during its second phase.
