2023 China Satellite Navigation Conference Highlights High-Quality Development of BeiDou Navigation Satellite System

April 28, 2023

Held in Beijing from April 26 to 28, the 13th China Satellite Navigation Conference (CSNC) placed its focus on promoting the high-quality construction, application, and development of China’s BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS).

Themed "Digital Economy and Intelligent Navigation", this year’s conference highlights driving the BDS to play a greater and more important role in national economy and social development.

More than 4,000 experts and scholars from home and abroad in the field of satellite navigation attended the conference online and offline.

In recent years, Chinese government has attached great importance to the development of large-scale BeiDou application by formulating and implementing the "14th Five-Year Plan" for the BeiDou navigation industry. The initiative was echoed by many industries and areas that have introduced special implementation plans and actions to effectively promote the market-driven, industrialized, and international development of large-scale BeiDou applications.

As of the end of 2021, the total number of terminal products with BeiDou positioning function exceeded 1.2 billion units.

In the transportation sector, more than 7.9 million road operating vehicles, over 47,000 ships, and more than 40,000 postal and express delivery vehicles had applied the BDS.

In the agriculture sector, over 100,000 agricultural machines with BeiDou autonomous driving systems had been installed nationwide.

In the water conservancy sector, the BeiDou system had provided short message communication services for hydrological monitoring in 2,587 reservoirs.

In terms of mass applications, over 5 million shared bicycles equipped with domestically produced high-precision BeiDou positioning chips had been deployed, covering more than 450 cities in China.

The lane-level navigation function based on the high-precision BeiDou system had been successfully piloted in 8 cities and is being popularized nationwide.

Over 300 billion uses of map software calling for BeiDou satellite positioning service were recorded every day, and smartphones that support the BDS-3 short message communication service are already sold in the market.

According to the conference, the next-generation BeiDou system will be built by 2035 as the core of a more ubiquitous, integrated, and intelligent national comprehensive space-time system that will provide unified standards, seamless coverage, secure and reliable, and convenient and efficient positioning, navigation and timing services, providing core support for future intelligent and unmanned development.

The 13th China Satellite Navigation Achievement Expo was also held during the conference showcasing the latest application achievements of BDS.
