September 11, 2022

IEEE 12th International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN 2022) was successfully held in Beijing on September 5-7, 2022.

The International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN) is the largest and most influential international conference in the field of indoor positioning and navigation in the world. And this is the first time that IPIN has been held in China.

IPIN 2022 was hosted by the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and technically co-sponsored by IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society, IEEE Instrumentation & Measurement Society and IEEE Beijing Section.

YUAN Hong from AIR and Antoni Perez Navarro from Open University of Catalonia, co-chairs of IPIN 2022, pointed out that the indoor navigation and positioning is known as the "last mile" of navigation and positioning, involving many industries and fields such as transportation, shopping and finance, care for special people, safety production, etc. It is a hot topic in the field of navigation and positioning in recent years, and also a hot topic in the field of unmanned driving, 5G/6G and other fields.

According to WEI Dongyan, IPIN 2022 deputy chair and technical Program Committee chair from AIR, 94 papers were accepted and will be published in IEEE Xplore and CEUR Workshop which are indexed by Scopus, Ei Compendex and DBLP. The contributions come from 117 universities, research centers and well-known enterprises around the world, with a total of 418 authors.

The event lasted for three days, and five experts from Huawei, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, London College, BDStar and Alibaba made keynote speeches. It set up 20 parallel sessions including 5G Positioning, Magnetic Localization, Crowd Source & Machine Learning Systems, Indoor Mapping, SLAM, Inertial and Hybrid Systems, etc.. It was opened to global users through online conferences and live webcasts. The maximum number of audiences on reached more than 16000.

The 9th IPIN International Indoor Positioning and Navigation Competition was also held at the same time. A total of six tracks including 5G positioning, UWB positioning, and smartphone positioning were set up in the competition, which attracted 26 competition teams from around the world. According to Francesco Potorti, the competition chair and professor of Italy National Research Council, due to the epidemic, the global synchronous online competition mode was adopted for the first time in the conference, which demonstrated the highest level of indoor positioning and navigation in the world.

IEEE Journal of Indoor and Seamless Positioning and Navigation, the world's first indoor positioning and navigation journal sponsored by IEEE, held its inaugural ceremony at the opening ceremony of the conference. Prof.Valerie Renaudin from Gustav Eiffel University, also the editor-in-chief of the journal, said that this is the only academic journal focusing on the field of indoor navigation and positioning in the world. The editorial board is composed of well-known experts in the field of indoor navigation and positioning from France, Italy, Japan, Canada, China and other countries.

Originally launched in 2010 in Zurich Switzerland, IPIN is a unique event focusing on indoor localization, its applications and development. It has been held for 11 editions in North America, Europe, Japan and South Korea, and became a global platform of communication for researchers, students and enterprises from countries and regions all over the world.
