International Carbon Satellite Observation Data Analysis Cooperation Program (CASA ) Steps into Second Phase

On May 30, 2021, the "international carbon satellite observation data analysis cooperation program" (CASA) phase II implementation plan and spring academic seminar organized by the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR), Chinese Academy of Sciences was held in the form of "online + offline" in Beijing.
The meeting was presided over by LI Guoqing, project leader and researcher of AIR. Experts from AIR, National Satellite Meteorological Centre (NSMC), Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, China University of Mining and Technology, Nanjing University, Guangzhou University and other team members attended the meeting.
The meeting included reports from seven working groups of the project on their implementation plans, and discussions on carbon neutralization, carbon dioxide inversion and other topics.
This meeting confirmed scientific data and e-Infrastructure are basic strategic resources for national scientific and technological innovation and development, are also most basic, active, and influential resources in carbon neutrality scientific researches.
At the same time, the first global carbon flux map by TanSat, a near-real-time daily dataset of global CO2 emission from fossil fuel and cement production, other observation, simulation and reanalyzed carbon data, and new scientific discoveries coming soon on CASA website (www.chinageoss.cn/tansat/casa.html) will provide more support for carbon neutrality scientific research.
CASA (phase II) adjusts and optimizes the objectives and mechanisms of the international program, expands the international cooperation network, expands the data, models and computing resources of the research infrastructure participating in the program on a global scale, supports more global change related research tasks, and forms more internationally influential achievements. It carries out international cooperation with the integrated GEO, IPCC and other international organizations to establish a global online analysis facility for space-based carbon observation data, gather and archive big data resources for space-based carbon observation, and use open supercomputer resources to establish an online analysis platform for big data research. It provides a reliable and credible solution for scientists in the field of global change to obtain, organize and analyze massive observation data.
CASA is based on the data resources of China's carbon satellite and other atmospheric composition observation satellites and integrates the big data resources of other global carbon observation satellites with supercomputing big computing resources to form a new integrated storage and computing infrastructure supporting global change research, which is open to global scientists free of charge.
The project was launched in 2019, organized and implemented in accordance with international rules. At present, it has established partnerships with 19 scientific research teams in Europe, the United States, Japan and other countries, and has formed an international scientific planning framework, organization system, operation system, and principles of intellectual property opening and protection initially recognized by the international research field from bottom to top. The project brings together 140 TB online carbon observation data resources from more than five international observation programs and 200 trillion times of computing power. Through this powerful new scientific research facility, it supports a series of major scientific research achievements, such as global carbon concentration products, chlorophyll fluorescence products, middle atmospheric carbon concentration stability zone, and etc.
