"Cooperation on the Analysis of Carbon Satellites Data (CASA)" Program Starts Second Phase

January 06, 2021

Cooperation on the Analysis of Carbon Satellites Data (CASA), an international scientific program has started its second phase, according to the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR), as well as the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) and Shanghai Advanced Research Institute (SARI).

The program was launched by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2018 as a response to combat climate change with the use of Big Earth data, in particular, to reform the research mode of carbon data-based exploration, to integrate carbon satellite data, models and computing technologies to advance interdisciplinary study, and to implement a Big Earth Data e-science platform for global carbon research.

On the Phase II launching meeting held on December 22, 2020, Prof. LI Guoqing from AIR, the program leader, reviewed that the project has built successful collaboration with more than 16 international scientific teams in the initiating phase.

He remarked that the Phase II will cover 5 areas of activities including capacity building, high-precision XCO2 product retrieval, domestic and global carbon development, information service integration, and developing countries training.

A platform for sharing global greenhouse gas satellite data was launched in the meeting (www.chinageoss.cn/tansat). According to the protocol between the National Remote Sensing Center of the China Ministry of Science and Technology of China (MOST / NRSCC) and ESA, Chinese users can access the sentinel-5P satellite data and Climate Change Initiative (CCI) product via the website.

It is also the first Chinese Sentinel Scientific Data Hub authorized by ESA.
