AIR Opens Greater Bay Area Terahertz Research Center in Guangzhou

September 10, 2019

During the launching ceremony of Beijing-Guangzhou Coordinated Innovation Center held in Guangzhou on August 28, the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) inaugurated its Greater Bay Area Terahertz Research Center. The center is jointly built by AIR together with local government, aiming to inject impetus to the S&T development of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

According to Prof. WU Yirong, Director General of AIR, the center will focus on the Terahertz basic theory and application research. He said that terahertz science and technology have broad scientific research and industrial prospects, and if the key scientific issues about the band of frequencies from 0.1THz to 10THz, which is called Terahertz (THz) Gap within the electromagnetic spectrum, are solved, it will  contribute greatly to the development of communication such as 6G or 7G, remote sensing and other high-end intelligent equipment.

Wu emphasized that the Research Center will target the R&D of terahertz theory, sources and detectors. Efforts will be made to explore new methods, new technologies, new materials, and new processes, aiming at making new breakthroughs in THz basic theory, bottleneck technologies at this new frequency band.
