Forum on "Leveraging Space Technology for Africa’s Sustainable Development" Held in South Africa
The Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences organized a thematic forum titled "Leveraging Space Technology for Africa’s Sustainable Development" in Pretoria, South Africa on December 5, 2024. The forum was part of the 2024 South Africa Science Forum and was co-hosted by AIR, the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), and the Alliance of International Science Organizations (ANSO). Over 80 experts and representatives from China, South Africa, and international organizations participated in the event.
Abel Ramoelo, Earth Observation Director at SANSA, welcomed the forum on behalf of SANSA CEO Humbulani Mudau. He highlighted South Africa's advancements in space information technologies and emphasized the broad prospects for collaboration between China and South Africa. He expressed hope that the two countries could elevate their cooperation to new levels, building on existing partnerships. SHEN Long, Minister Counselor from the Chinese Embassy in South Africa, extended congratulations on the forum's success and reviewed significant achievements in Sino-South African science and technology cooperation. He noted that as key BRICS members and mutual strategic partners, both countries have a solid foundation for further collaboration in leveraging space information technologies to support Africa’s sustainable development.
The forum featured three thematic sessions: Space-based ICT for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , Earth observation data services for Africa, and Harnessing Data for Global Food Security. 10 experts delivered presentations on topics such as remote sensing data reception and services, aerostat platforms, cloud computing, precision agriculture, BeiDou navigation, and terahertz technology, showcasing their applications in advancing sustainable development across Africa.
The event provided a robust platform for enhancing future space information collaborations between AIR and South Africa. The Chinese Embassy in South Africa offered strong guidance and support for the forum, and several scientific instruments developed by AIR were showcased during the event.
The South Africa Science Forum, organized annually by the South African Department of Science and Innovation, has become a significant platform for dialogue on science and innovation across Africa. The 2024 edition attracted registrations from over 5,000 participants representing more than 80 countries, with contributions from over 80 research institutions, businesses, government agencies, and diplomatic missions.
