Nov 30, 2021

A side event themed "Global Ecosystem and Environment Observation Analysis Research Cooperation (GEOARC) Supports for SDGs" was held online on 26 November with the goal to promote ecological environment governance by Earth observations and international cooperation. The event was co-hosted by the National Remote Sensing Center of China (NRSCC) under China's Ministry of Science and Technology, together with the State Key Laboratory of Remote Sensing Science under the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR), Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The highlights of GEOARC in 2021 featured four annual analysis reports and 37 datasets, which can be accessed to and downloaded for free on the GEOSS Data Sharing Network, according to Prof. LIU Qinhuo, co-chair of GEOARC.

The GEOARC 2021 reports highlight developing Environment Essential Variable (EEV) products and addresses the issues of SDG 3, 6, 7, 11, 13, 14, 15 and 17 to support the evidence-based decision making for environmental protection for Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

Prof. WU Bingfang, co-Chair of GEOGLAM introduced the CropWatch Cloud for Capacity Building of Crop Monitoring in Developing countries. Ecological Environmental Status of Global Typical Lakes and Grassland Ecological Status in Eurasia are introduced by Prof. ZHANG Qi and Prof. XIN Xiaoping.

The panel discussion focused on the topics such as new techniques in the field, implementation plan of GEOARC, and how to improve multilateral cooperation to support the GEO engagement priorities.

GEOARC was initiated in 2012 by NRSCC, marking Chinese scientists' efforts to integrate into global scientific and technological innovation network for better global ecological environment governance.
