AOGEO Workshop on Environmental Monitoring and Protection Held Online

Mar 05, 2021

AOGEO (Asia-Oceania GEO) TG7 Environmental Monitoring and Protection Online Workshop was held in Beijing on February 24, 2021. The event was hosted by the State Key Laboratory of Remote Sensing Science and the Aerospace Information Research Institute (AIR), Chinese Academy of Science (CAS).

The workshop, presided over by LIU Qinhuo (the Co-Chair of AOGEO TG7) and Alfredo Huete, aimed to make implementation plans as a response to the  challenges related to the environmental monitoring and protection, especially on how to facilitate the implementation of SDGs in AO region by developing policy for conservation and sustainable development.

Scholars from China, Australia, Bangladesh and other countries in AO region participated the online event to discuss the following topics such as China's platform on global observation for improving urban sustainability, global ecological environment monitoring, integrated remote sensing monitoring of ecosystems in AO region, global ecosystem and environment observation analysis research cooperation (GEOARC), remote sensing monitoring of ecosystem over Asia-Oceania hot areas, forest change and driving forces the Greater Mekong Subregion and Malaysia, impervious surface mapping in the Lancang-Mekong Basin, among other topics.

Asia-Oceania Group on Earth Observations(AOGEO), one of four regional GEO programs, is set up to effectively improve the capability and application of earth observation in AO region, promote the further development of earth observation technology in developing countries, foster the exchange of experts and scholars at home and abroad, and plan future development and implementation plan of AOGEO.

Environmental Monitoring and Protection (EMP) Task Group 7 (TG7) of AOGEO was established in 2016, and now are moving to address challenges in environmental AOGEO monitoring and protection in AO region. This task is set up to improve the regional cooperation to monitor the terrestrial ecosystem status and atmosphere environmental qualities, and to provide decision-making support knowledge for human being health and environmental protection.

It is also actively promoted cooperation with other global, regional, and national organizations to participate in GEO for environment monitoring and protection.
